Dear L2 students,

I hope you manage to cope with the hybrid system.

First, here is the message for students in GROUP 1, here is your homework for next class, October 14th. (Students in GROUP 2, please scroll down for your homework).

- From Sunday onwards, check that you have the correct answers for the vocabulary exercises. I will post a document titled “WEEK 2 summary of class” in which you will have the vocabulary seen in class + the answers for the vocabulary exercise.

- We’ll start a brand-new chapter (13) on Mergers and Acquisitions. Please read the text on page 100-101. Please look up in the dictionary all the vocabulary you don’t know. Try to find synonyms. Basically, it is an easy way of upgrading your class participation mark by giving synonyms when we go over the text in class together.

- Read all the definitions related to chapter 13.

- Please do the comprehension and vocabulary exercises on chapter 13.

- Please read online the grammar point on PAST TENSES. We’ll correct together the grammar point on the present perfect and past simple you had to do in the chapter on Companies.

- Please do the extra exercise I have posted on the EPI “Extra exercise on past tenses”.

- Make sure you have learnt the definitions on the Company Chapter. Your comrades in Group 2 will kindly design mind maps for definitions on the chapter on companies. You will be able to access them through the glossary in the coming days. We might start the class with a taboo game. Some students in Group 2 were particularly talented at this game, you don’t want to be the weakest link, cram for your definitions and you’ll be the strongest link!

- Draw up a list of pros and cons of mergers and acquisitions for companies. Try to find at least 10 arguments.

By the way, I think I didn’t receive all your exercises for this week on the EPI. You still have until Saturday to post them online!!! Remember it counts for your class participation mark.

Optional homework (which won’t count for your class participation mark): some of you have asked me an essay topic to practice at home. Here the topic if you are interested: According to you, which companies have thrived during the pandemic? (200 words in Word format necessarily and by email (not on the EPI); use the present perfect and the simple past; and linking words). A list of linking words is available on the EPI along with a writing guideline.

Here is the second message for GROUP 2.

Thank you very much for your participation in class, you did a great job! As agreed, here is your homework

-> for next week first:

- Read all the definitions related to chapter 13.

- Please do the comprehension and vocabulary exercises on chapter 13.

- Please read online the grammar point on PAST TENSES and do the extra exercise on past tenses if you feel it could be beneficial for you.

Then POST YOUR EXERCISES on the EPI online : WEEK 3 group 2.

- Do the mind maps using Coggle or Word (Word or another software might be the best bet since as I told you, you could add the Wh- questions such (where, when, what, or “aim”, “role”, and so on). Post these mind maps in the glossary. I posted a model on the glossary for the word “company”: make sure you add your mind map but also the linear definition with the synonyms (in italics). When you add your word, make sure you select the “Company” category so when you study your definitions for the chapter on companies you will be able to click directly on the right section without having the whole glossary.

These definitions are meant to be collaborative. If you spot a mistake on someone else’s definition, please feel free to correct it. This is for the benefit of the community!
